Herzig, Saturday Shoes to play next ParkFest

Sunday, July 13, 2014

Another installment of the Greencastle Civic League's ParkFest summer music series is set for Tuesday at the Bob Flanigan Bandshell at Robe-Ann Park.

The free concert will begin at 6:30 p.m., with Monika Herzig, followed by Saturday Shoes.

Bon Appetit will be the food vendor. The performances are sponsored by Bob and Ellen Sedlack, York Automotive and the Greencastle Civic League.

Herzig was awarded a scholarship for a one-year exchange program at the University of Alabama.

Together with her partner and guitarist Peter Kienle, she arrived in the U.S. on a one-way ticket, with one suitcase of belongings and one guitar in Aug. 1988.

Since then she has completed her doctorate in music education and jazz studies at Indiana University, where she is now a faculty member. Her book "David Baker -- A Legacy in Music" was released Nov. 2011 on IU Press. As a touring jazz artist, she has performed at many prestigious jazz clubs and festivals, such as the Indy Jazz Fest, Cleveland's Nighttown, Louisville's Jazz Factory, the W.C. Handy Festival, Jazz in July in Bloomington and Cincinnati, Columbus' Jazz & Rib Fest, to name just a few.

Recently, Herzig has been signed to the Owl Studios label and released the holiday CD "Peace on Earth." A CD/DVD combo titled "Come With Me" was released March 8, 2011.

The current repertoire of the Monika Herzig Acoustic Project includes originals and arrangements of standard repertoire, such as John Lennon's "Imagine," Cole Porter's "Night and Day," or Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia".

The Monika Herzig Trio can be heard every Saturday at Rick's Cafe Boatyard at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis.

Saturday Shoes is an Alt-Country and Indie Rock cover band in Putnam County.

Entering its sixth year of playing music together, the band's mission remains the same: to eschew popular music for the raw, quintessentially American sound of alt-country and indie rock. However, they have been known to be suckers for disco and 1970s soft rock.

All labels aside, the band still has a wide array of songs to choose from, so listeners can expect broad choices in the set list.

Recently the band has covered artists from Neil Young to Dr. Dog, from My Morning Jacket to Dawes. The list of artists they cover is simply too long to print.

Saturday Shoes is a band that anyone can enjoy. They may cover a song from 50 years ago, or from last week.

In the end, Saturday Shoes is simply devoted to having and providing a good time.

After a week off for the Putnam County Fiar, the final installment of ParkFest is set for Tuesday, July 29, featuring Carly Rhine, Haley Jonay, October Scene.
