Eckel advised Lt. Donnie Pettit that he blacked out or fell asleep, causing his vehicle to travel into the northbound lane. Stewart veered his 2011 Kenworth truck to the right, but could not avoid a collision.

Eckel reportedly sideswiped Stewart, causing heavy damage to the front driver's side tire areas of both vehicles.

After impact, Eckel continued approximately 460 feet before striking a power pole and coming to rest in a bean field off the east side of the roadway.

Stewart traveled approximately 395 feet after impact, coming to rest just off the west side of the roadway.
