July 2014 coolest on record in central Indiana

July 2014 became the coolest July of record to date on Tuesday.

Below normal temperatures have persisted through Thursday, and as a result July 2014 stands as the coolest July of record for central Indiana since weather records for the Indianapolis area began in 1871.

The average temperature for July 2014 is 70.2 degrees or more than five degrees below the monthly normal of 75.4 degrees, the National Weather Service Indianapolis office reported.

That is about one-half of a degree cooler than July 1947 -- previously the coolest July of record.

At the time -- five years ago July 2009 became the second coolest July of record and the coolest since 1947.

It has only been two years since the Indianapolis area experienced the hottest month of record. The average temperature for July 2012 was 84.0 degrees -- nearly 14 degree warmer than this month.
