Golf three-way with GHS, NPHS

Thursday, August 14, 2014

The Greencastle Tiger Cubs and North Putnam Cougars girls' golf teams both played together in a three-way meet with the Cascade Cadets on Thursday night. The meet took place at Windy Hill Golf Club with Greencastle coming in first with a score of 212 and North Putnam coming in third with a score of 259. The Cascade Cadets finished with a score of 233.

"This is a hard course," Greencastle head coach Bob Hedge said, "The scores were really bad."

North Putnam and Greencastle were supposed to face-off Monday, but the weather had different plans.

The medalist award went to Greencastle senior Lauren Bridgewater who shot a 47. Hedge said it was a good score but that Bridgewater was unhappy with it.

"Lauren Bridgewater, tonight, played really well," Hedge said, "She's very consistent shooting mostly in the mid-40s now. She's not very happy with how she played, but that's a good thing I guess."

Macey Masten finished second in the match with a score of 50. This helped her Tiger Cubs team to victory. Lokysa Scheuermann finished with a 55, Haley Cash finished with a 60 and Lindsey Bridgewater finished with a 62 to round out the scoring.

"Our freshman Macey Masten came back tonight and played pretty well," Hedge said, "She had a couple bad holes, but other than that she played really well for a freshman."

Cougar golfers came in nervous and it affected their game. Junior Emily Harrington topped the Cougars with a 64. Seniors Olivia Zarate and Jessie Cox and freshman Emmy Eltz all scored 65s. Freshman Taylor Dixon scored a 71.

"You have to get that out of your mind," coach Linda Patrick said, "When you have that attitude going into it even before you step into the first tee box it's going to hurt your whole game. You've already got the thoughts in your head that's going to be tough. We talked about how the greens here are really fast and how hole two is really treacherous, but you've got to bear with it. I haven't looked at the number of putts yet, but it looked like they were taking their time and not over shooting it like they could have. The mental game is the hardest thing. Once you've thought it, it's already there and you've defeated yourself."

Patrick said she believed the team could've performed a little better and gotten a better score.

"We came into a match that we could've been very competitive with," Patrick said, "The other teams aren't very consistent. Every one of those girls could've been within five strokes of the other one way or another."

Cascade stayed pretty quiet and consistent with four out of their five golfers scoring between a 56 and a 61. Its final golfer, Autumn Holden finished with a 78.

Greencastle will travel to Rocky Ridge Golf Course Monday to shoot off with the North Montgomery Chargers and North Putnam will have a week off before traveling to Clover Meadows on Aug. 25 to compete against Cloverdale and Owen Valley.
