Tuesday, August 19, 2014

BRAZIL -- The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, presents "Grand Finale 2014 -- The High School Cadets" on Sunday, Aug. 24.

The free concert will begin at the special time of 7:30 p.m. at Brazil's Forest Park, rain or shine.

For the final park performance of the summer, the BCB will honor Clay County high schools past and present with each of their fight songs.

Band members Joy Minor, Shelley Criss, Andy Whittington, David Brinson, Norman Hanson and Clay County Commissioner Paul Sinders contributed to finding the music each of the former Clay County institutions played for various high school events.

School songs to be heard from proud high schools which consolidated through the years will honor Van Buren, Staunton, Ashboro, Cory, Coalmont, Bowling Green and Brazil.

The BCB will also perform the school songs of Clay County's two current high schools, Clay City and Northview.

Tying them all together will be John Philip Sousa's "The High School Cadets" which he wrote when Washington, D.C., had only one high school.

The BCB encourages all Clay County graduates to wear their school colors and attend the grand finale.

Band member Norman Hanson will debut his composition, "In Memoriam Amantem" to the Forest Park audience, recognizing all the musical friends who have passed on to that big band shell in the sky over the years.

Chuck Dugger, a member of the euphonium section, has written a euphonium quartet based on "The Star-Spangled Banner" and will perform along with his section mates Natascha Bowles, Duane Caperton and Hanson along with band background.

The concert will include "Poet and Peasant Overture" by Von Suppe-Fillmore, "The Wizard of Oz" by Arlen-Barnes, "Folk Song Suite" by Vaughan Williams, "Music of Disney" by Brubaker, and "Memories of Stephen Foster" by Holmes.

March classics will strut with "Supreme Triumph" and "Shrine of Liberty" by Jewell, "Americans, We" and "His Honor" by Fillmore and, of course, "The Stars and Stripes Forever" by Sousa.

The Brazil Concert Band will next perform for the Clay County Courthouse Centennial on Sept. 6 at 1 p.m.
