North Putnam's volleyball team opened its season with a young team and a goal of focus. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they saw their first loss at home against the Panthers of Riverton Parke in five games.

"We had some goals set tonight," coach Brandy Dickson said. "We wanted to serve-receive more than the other team. We were really hoping to force the opponent out of system more than they did us."

The Cougars jumped out to a lead after the early start dominating the first game.

"We thought things were going well and then we really struggled and just got too far down and couldn't really get out of that hole."

The team did fight hard . after losing the second game the team got on top early in the third and stayed ahead of the Panthers all night.

"We actually struggled a little more than we did the second game, but we picked back up after that game. We were able to put things back together and they really executed," Dickson said. "I thought we communicated well and they've been working on trying to execute. Right-on receive and right on free balls and I felt like they did a nice job especially in that first and third game."

After the third game the Panthers took control of the fourth leading to a final game that was close throughout.

The Cougars however made some errors that ultimately cost them the match despite some great plays by players.

"They really started tipping," Dickson said. "We had some tic-tacky things that we didn't turn around and turn into an advantage for us offensively and we struggled a bit with hitting."

Dickson did mention that certain players played well in a different circumstance in this first volleyball match of the season.

I feel like Lyndi Parent did a nice job. It's her first setting at the varsity level," Dickson said. "Really her first time ever. She's been a hitter for us since middle school. We turned her into a setter and she did a really nice job."

North Putnam's next match will be Thursday at Covenant Christian at 7 p.m.
