Opening Day

Friday, August 22, 2014

After months of construction work, South Indiana Street has reopened to traffic, parking and commerce just south of the courthouse square in Greencastle. The patient people at First Christian Church on South Indiana Street were among those applauding the new look Friday, even offering a sign thanking not only the City of Greencastle but the construction crew from Rieth-Riley, Indianapolis. Included in the work were a new asphalt surface, new sidewalks, brick pavers and street trees.

  • The new Indiana Street does look appealing, although there are some major problems - losing 20 parking spaces in just three blocks from Washington Steet to the Inn at DePauw and grass bump outs at intersections which will require mowing each summer and bump outs which require unusual manuvering when pulling out from the parallel parking or around them when making what used to be a simple 90 degree turn. Progress?? I don't think so.

  • Agree with Lookout. Poor design on someones part. Parking downtown is at a premium and all of these spaces are deleted. This is progress???? And more trees planted and not be taken care of. Just look at the condition of the trees around the square. Half dead, to large and hide store fronts, sidewalks dirty with the bloom and leaves that fall from them and then are tracked into the businesses. Whomever decided on this should have to clean the mess they leave. BAD BAD BAD!!!!
