Cougars take loss to Edgewood
ROACHDALE--The North Putnam Cougars' football season opened up by facing the formidable duo of senior running back Gabe Koontz and senior quarterback Zack Harrison followed by the rest of the Edgewood Mustang team.
The pair rushed for well over 200 yards combined and each scored a touchdown en route to a 39-6 win.
The Cougars did not score until 3:10 left in the game when junior quarterback Bradley Hodges ran for a six-yard touchdown. The PAT was blocked.
"What it comes down to tonight is we did not make enough plays," coach Greg Barrett said. "We didn't move the ball. We didn't move the ball on defense. We missed tackles. We had turnovers. You can't do those things and win a game."
Junior Blake Everts set Hodges' touchdown up by rushing 34 yards on three carries during the drive. He also had a 44-yard run that was negated because of a false start.
Hodges had 67 rush yards on the night on 18 carries. He also threw for 92 pass yards, but gave up three interceptions.
"Blake ran the ball hard there at the end," Barrett said. "We're still figuring some things out. We got athletes out there.
Terry Weiss returned the second of Hodges' interceptions 72 yards for a touchdown with just over 30 seconds left in the first half. That sent the Mustangs up 26-0 at half.
Hodges was also sacked five times.
The next Cougar matchup will be next Friday at Southmont.
