Greencastle tennis keeps up hot streak
The Greencastle boys' tennis team continued its hot start Wednesday when it beat the Rockville Rox in four of five matches.
"We did really well," coach Kevin Rowe said. "I was a little disappointed with our effort at the start. We kind of came back and started playing better after a few games in. So that was good to see."
No. 1 singles player Christian Ritchey's match went the longest and despite his output of effort and endurance he came up short losing 7-6 and 6-4.
"It was a tough loss to see," Rowe said. "Obviously you never want your one singles to lose. But at the same time he had a great comeback and that's what we want to see from him. So now it seems like he's poised and ready to play again this Saturday."
At the No. 2 and No. 3 singles, Jed Fajt and Jason Ummel handled their competition. Fajt won 6-0 and 6-2 while Ummel won 7-3 and 6-1.
The doubles fared well for the Tiger Cubs as both teams were able to take control of the match and keep it.
Jake Mangrum and Kaleb Flemming, in the No. 1 doubles slot, won their sets 6-0 and 6-1.
"I feel like our team is doing pretty well," Mangrum said. "Hopefully our season will go even better. We were a little rusty today but I think we are playing well as a team."
Despite the rust the team remains in the winning circle after its first win in the Sullivan Invite and winning again at Edgewood. The No. 2 doubles won 6-1 and 6-3.
"Over the years we've worked really hard," Mangrum said. "We worked really hard in the offseason. I know myself and a few of the other guys hit every day in the offseaon."
Greencastle will travel to Brown County for a 9 a.m. tournament on Saturday.
