CLOVERDALE West Vigo's volleyball team traveled to the Clover gym to try and gain some momentum in what has been a rough start to its season. However Clovers' took advantage of many opportunities that came their way and took the win 3-1.

The first game didn't go to the Clovers as the Lady Vikings put pressure on the home team late in the game. After being down 21-17 the Clovers went on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 23. West Vigo pulled away toward the end winning the first game 27-25.

"The first set probably could've went either way," coach Kathy Moore said. "We made one or two mental mistakes and a service error. That's how it goes sometimes."

In game two, Cloverdale (3-2) came out attacking jumping to 7-3 lead and using its multiple attacking weapons to gain the advantage.

"We are a very balanced attacking team this year, moreso than we've been in a couple of years," Moore said. "We get a lot of kills from a variety of players. In fact, we get kills from every single one of our players, which is kind of unusual. That's a real strength for us."

After West Vigo tied the game at 10, Cloverdale again went on a run pushing the score to 20-12. They withstood a Lady Viking surge to win the set, 25-19.

Another thing Moore said led to good sets was the entire team's cohesiveness, including the players off the bench.

"I have a good bench," Moore said. "Tonight we passed the ball better than we did against Clay City."

Cloverdale took control of the match after the game two victory and handled the third match 17-8 midway through. They won that match 25-14.

"I thought West Vigo was an improved team from last year," Moore said. "They had a couple of girls who sold the ball very well. Thought we handled that pretty well. "

Moore says she is lucky to have a team full of players who are close and who always want to win.

"This is a tight knit group of kids. They like each other. They play well together and they are very competitive. You don't always get that. So I'm lucky to have that this year. "

Cloverdale made sure game four wasn't close as it finished off the set 25-13. This also marked the first win for the JV squad.

Cloverdale's next match is at home against Turkey Run on Tuesday and they travel to Greencastle to take on the Tiger Cubs on Thursday.
