Fourth annual 'DePauwpalooza' set for Friday evening

Monday, September 15, 2014

As summer turns to fall, the DePauw School of Music is inviting the community to celebrate the great outdoors and student-produced sounds of the fourth annual "DePauwpalooza."

The outdoor music festival will be held in Bowman Park (in front of the Green Center for the Performing Arts) this Friday, Sept. 19. Co-presented by student government, the event starts at 5:30 p.m. and continues until 7 p.m.

Everyone is invited to attend; free pizza will be served while it lasts.

Six acts will be presented on Friday, including the university's orchestra, chorus, band, chamber singers and jazz ensemble, along with the cast from the department of communication and theater's upcoming production of "Parade."

WGRE (91.5 FM) also plans to broadcast the festival live.

"It is always a great education to perform anywhere," Director of Orchestras Orcenith Smith said, "but taking our show outside our building into Bowman Park for the general DePauw student population is a special one-of-a-kind picnic celebration that showcases our music ensembles in a very different kind of setting. The festive atmosphere is a real treat for everyone."

Attendees are encouraged to join in a game of frisbee or football on the lawn with friends while the music plays. Although warmer weather is predicted, music events coordinator Janice Bagwell is prepared to move activities into the Green Center in the event of rain.

"We definitely have a Plan B," Bagwell said. "If there is any chance of inclement weather, the event will take place in the Great Hall of the Green Center, and we hope everyone will come inside to have free pizza and listen to the music."
