Thursday, September 18, 2014
Mill Pond Health Campus, winner of the 2013 Golden Plate Award for the best food at the annual Taste of Putnam County, will return to defend its title Saturday during the 4-8 p.m. event at the Dixie Chopper Business Center.

With a dozen local businesses providing samples of their delicacies and three musical acts on tap, the fifth annual Taste of Putnam County will focus on food, music and fun Saturday, Sept. 20.

The Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce will again stage its 4-8 p.m. event at the Dixie Chopper Business Center at the Putnam County Airport on Ballard Lane off State Road 240 on the city's far East Side.

"This is the fifth year for this growing community event," Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tammy Johnson advised, "and we are very excited about this year's Taste."

The 12 Taste of Putnam County participants for 2014 will be:

-- Almost Home.

-- Asbury Towers Retirement Community.

-- Autumn Glen.

-- Bert and Betty's Kitchen.

-- Bon Appetit at DePauw University.

-- Charlie's (serving Beefcake Burgers).

-- Cinnamon Girls Bakery.

-- Mill Pond Health Campus.

-- McDonald's.

-- Moore's Bar and Grill.

-- Sweet Wishes by Eitel's Florist.

-- The Waters of Greencastle.

All of the above will be bringing food for the public to sample, and at the end of the evening attendees will have an opportunity to vote for the "Best Food" of the evening. The winner will take home the Taste of Putnam County Traveling Plaque to display for the next year.

That Golden Plate Award has been presented since 2011. Last year's winner was Mill Pond Health Campus. The Inn at DePauw won the honor in 2012 with The Final Approach Restaurant and Pub taking top honors in 2011.

Tickets for admission to Saturday's Taste of Putnam County are $5 per person. Children 12 and under are admitted for free. Food tickets are $1 each and can be purchased at the event. No food item will be more than three tickets and most are one or two tickets.

Tickets are on sale at the Chamber of Commerce office, 16 S. Jackson St., Greencastle, and the Dixie Chopper Business Center. They can also be purchased Saturday.

Among the entertainers will be Steve St. Pierre and his Blues Side Up group.

Along with the lots of tasty Putnam County food, the event traditionally features a variety of entertainment, and this year is no different.

Live music will include newcomer Brent Arnold, and returning entertainers Blues Side Up of Greencastle and singer Barbara Ellen of Crawfordsville.

Free kids' games are being sponsored by Big Bounce Fun House Rentals, Indiana National Guard, Northern Putnam County Girl Scouts, Old National Bank, PNC Bank, Teachers Credit Union and The Waters of Greencastle.

Meanwhile, for the second year the Taste of Putnam County also will include the Putnam County Family Support Service "Chairish the Child" silent chair auction fundraiser as a part of the event.

Adults will also find a beer garden and corn hole action.

Each person's entry ticket will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a large flat-screen television donated by University Lending.

Corporate sponsors supporting of the annual Chamber event include Dixie Chopper Business Center, Duke Energy, Big Bounce Fun House Rentals, First National Bank, Banner-Graphic, Greencastle Offset Printing and Graphics, Taylor Made Awards and Promotions, University Lending, North Salem State Bank, Starbucks and Putnam County Hospital.

"Without the generosity of these businesses," Johnson stressed, "this event would not be possible."

Anyone with questions about the event may call Johnson at the Chamber office (653-4517).
