Local endowments win Share the Dream

The Putnam County Community Foundation has announced the winners of this year's Share the Dream Contest -- the Greencastle Summer Music Festival, Bainbridge High School Alumni Scholarship Purdue Club of Putnam County Scholarship,and Russellville Community Center.

A total of $85,199 was raised this year during Share the Dream, the Community Foundation's annual fundraising contest, which starts May 1 and ends Aug. 31 each year. The top three endowments raised $65,356.

The Greencastle Summer Music Festival Endowment raised the most money, $35,234, winning an additional $1,617.35 from the Community Foundation.

The Summer Music Festival Endowment was started by the family of Paul and Joanne Kissinger in 2010 to support the annual concert series founded 10 years ago by Eric Edberg. The weekly music events are free and open to the public, and feature local, national and international performers, all made possible by donations from individuals and businesses in the community. Informal events were staged this year on Tuesday evenings at Starbucks with full concerts every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church.

The Bainbridge High School Alumni Scholarship raised $23,491.60 and won an additional $1,078.32 from the Community Foundation.

In addition Bainbridge alumni won the Online Giving Day competition in May and received an additional $1,000 for their endowment from the Community Foundation. Bainbridge alums started the scholarship at the end of 2012 with the goal of raising $100,000, which would allow them to award one $1,000 four-year scholarship every year in perpetuity. Their recent achievement brings them to a fund balance of more than $66,000.

The Purdue Club of Putnam County Scholarship raised $6,630 and won an additional $304.33.

The Purdue Club has been awarding scholarships to Putnam County students who wish to attend Purdue University since 2002. It established the scholarship endowment at the Community Foundation at the end of 2003 and also plan to build its endowment to $100,000.

The Russellville Community Center Endowment received notice that the it had been named a beneficiary of a bequest gift. In recognition of this achievement, the Community Foundation awarded $250 to the Russellville Community Center Endowment.

The Russellville Community Center brings the community together for various activities, including the annual Christmas Cantata and monthly Sunday meals. It provides a place of safe recreation for youth and adults, and serves as an emergency shelter for the American Red Cross.

The Putnam County Community Foundation is a nonprofit public charity established in 1985 to serve donors, award grants and provide leadership, enriching the quality of life and strengthening community in Putnam County.

Lilly Endowment Inc. is currently matching donations to the Community Grants Endowment dollar for dollar up to $500,000. The Community Grants Endowment supports the Community Grants Program, the Endowment Builder Program, the Nonprofit Learning Series, the Youth Philanthropy Program, Envision 2016 and other community initiatives.
