A rainy night and a sloppy field played their parts in the Greencastle homecoming game against Cascade. Despite a few setbacks due to the wet conditions the Tiger Cubs slugged out a victory for the third win of the season 10-0.

The defense began the game well and controlled the start of the game allowing the offense to get a jump-start on the momentum. Zach Secrest gained 18 yards on the first play from scrimmage.

Trey Scanland took a reverse later for 10 yards. The first drive culminated with an 18-yardd pass to Ryley Cook from Calvin Hughes who is still filling in for an injured Nick Costin, putting the home team up 7-0 early.

"I think that homecoming went well. We all had a lot of fun out here," Hughes said. "I'm really glad we got the W on homecoming. Our running game was really strong. We could move the ball on them so that was good."

GHS coach Ryan Spoonmore said some tinkering had to be done tothe offensive game plan and his players adjusted well.

"We had a gameplan to try and get Nate (Tesmer) one-on-one so we could do some things," said Spoonmore. "They adjusted to that so we went back to our base stuff."

After a defensive stand the Tiger Cubs were called for roughing the kicker but Tesmer applied the pressure on the next drive to put the Cadets in a punting situation.

Into the second quarter the offense was showing some good chemistry behind the throwing of Hughes and receiving of Tesmer. A 26-yard pass to Tesmer followed by a seven-yard pass put the Purple Pride in scoring position.

"(Hughes') doing well," Spoonmore said. "He's had a great attitude. He just stepped up and I let him and Nick coachtonight. I thought it was awesome because I could stand and talk about a great football game with him. I usually can't with a lot of guys going both ways."

The late drive, however, ended with an interception and at the half it was 7-0 Greencastle.

Greencastle started with the ball in the third but fumbled on the drive near midfield with seven minutes left in the third quarter. It wouldn't mater because of the stingy defense led by Elijah Williams, Austin Mitchell and Tesmer.

"We played assignment-sound and we played together," Mitchell said. "Eleven hearts beat as one. I'm very proud of what we accomplished. We shut them out and that's obvious. So that's a big win."

On the next drive Secrest broke a big 40-yard run to put the ball in striking distance. After a 29-yard Hughes pass to Cook on a crucial third-and-13, Sedrick Weinschenk put a kick through the uprights from 23 yards, giving the Tiger Cub team its final score.

With a quarter to play, the game became a defensive standoff with Cascade not wanting to give up any rushing first downs and Greencastle fighting to stop any big plays.

An 18-yard passing touchdown scored by the Cadets was wiped out due to a holding penalty and Ryley Cook ended two drives in a row with his great play in the defensive backfield.

"I'm really proud of our guys," Spoonmore said. "I'm proud of our defense. They got a shutout on Homecoming. You've got to win games like these. Life isn't all roses. Life is adversity. That's why football is such a great game.

"Our guys dealt with the adversity. They were getting after it. A win's a win and a shutout on Homecoming is pretty good."

Greencastle next match a Senior Night showdown against Owen Valley.
