Twelve cross country teams visited South Putnam Saturday for the IHSAA sectional.

It was the third time in a row that county schools had raced on the hilly terrain at South Putnam and each team was well versed in how they wanted to attack the morning's event.

"We did a lot of hills," said North Putnam coach Kevin Lutes. "This is a very hilly course. We are fortunate to have the woods behind our school, where we can be able to have a place like that where we knew we could simulate the turns and the slippery ground through the mud. It was really the hills. That was the biggest part of what we did."

With Brownsburg placing first in the boys' race, Greencastle was the lowest scoring county team. They placed third with a score of 121.

"I told the boys it was going to be tough to get out of there," GHS coach Garry Anderson said. "You were going to have to bust your buns to get out and do your best. We were concerned at the beginning we weren't sure if we wound be running with Cameron Lewis. He decided to run and in fact we have some boys that ran extremely well."

South Putnam got into the top five with 137.

"This is definitely, for the guys and girls, the best we've ran all season," said Eagle coach Brandon Welti. "At the start of the year we always talk about how we want to do well at county and we want to do well at conference but the sectionals are our ultimate goal. We want to be at our best by sectional.

"This year it worked out great. For the girls and to our surprise the guys as well. We really did not expect the guys' team to be able to advance. They just ran amazingly well and it paid off."

Cloverdale placed ninth with 282 and North Putnam ran with an incomplete team score.

Brownsburg's Hariharan Sathyamurth, with a time of 16:50:05, was the leader.

Kieffer Vittetow of South Putnam was the first Putnam County runner across the finish line. His time of 17:29.49 placed ninth. Greencastle's Taylor Secrest placed 12th with 17:35.89.

Avon took the top spot in the girls' race and Greencastle finished fourth with 102. The Eagle's came in just behind the Cubs with 112. North Putnam had 234 and placed eighth. The Clovers placed 10th with an incomplete team score.

With a time of 21:38.48, Corrie Romer of Greencastle finished 12th, helping the Tiger Cubs into the next round.

Madison Egold placed 14th and had a time of 21:45.01. Greencastle's Brittany Love and Arianna Pershing finished 18th and 20th respectively while Ariel Higgins took 24th.

For the Lady Clovers two individuals, Victoria Szalay and Clare Plamondon, will be advancing along with the top five teams to the Ben Davis Regional Saturday.

Clover coach Andy Tyler said that he won't be preaching anything different than what was the point of emphasis all season.

"I want to go out hard," Tyler said. "We want to run our first mile hard. Then assess the situation. Then always go for the kid in front of us. We got to keep that mentality."
