Bainbridge Elementary celebrates Walk to School Day

As the sun came up on a brisk fall morning in Putnam County, Bainbridge Elementary School Principal Rodney Simpson led a parade of elementary students, teachers and volunteers on a half-mile walk to school in celebration of International Walk to School Day.

"It is a time to educate students about how to walk or bike to school safely," Simpson explained.

The event began in 1997 and was intended to be a one-time event but, over time, the it has grown into a larger movement celebrated annually in October.

Bainbridge Elementary had around 45 students participate in the event that includes thousands of schools across the country and participation from more than 40 countries worldwide.

Next year's event will be held On Oct. 7, 2015.
