Gleaners' pilot food pantry for seniors coming to fairgrounds Tuesday

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is launching a new Senior Mobile Pantry pilot program for persons age 55 and over living in Putnam County.

The program's focus is on helping residents who struggle with hunger and food insecurity, officials said in announcing the new effort.

Gleaners is partnering with the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry to bring the Senior Mobile Pantry to Putnam County on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

Gleaners' Senior Mobile Pantry will be in Greencastle 2-4 p.m. Tuesday at the Putnam County Fairgrounds Community Building, located at 191 N. U.S. 231.

To receive food, persons will be asked to present an ID showing proof of age and residency. In addition, participants are asked to bring their own bags or boxes.

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana supplies items to hunger relief agencies and schools throughout 21 counties in central and southeast Indiana.

Since its inception, Gleaners has distributed nearly 350 million pounds of food and critical grocery products to more than 250 hunger relief agencies serving needy Hoosiers.

In Gleaners' 21-county service area, more than 260,000 residents reportedly struggle with hunger and food insecurity, 97,000 of which are children.
