Local fire crews work to put out a hot spot in a Madison Township home Friday afternoon.

A fire resulted in heavy water and smoke damage, but no injuries at a Madison Township residence Friday afternoon.

The Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the home of Seth Collins at 5844 W. County Road 375 South at 1:44 p.m. on reports of smoke coming from the home.

According to Madison Township Fire Chief Lee Price, firefighters arrived on scene shortly after finding smoke coming from the attic area of the home, but showing no flames. Firefighters from local crews were able to quickly control the fire using nearly 750 gallons of water.

"No flames were showing when I first got here," Price noted. "We probably had it out in 20 minutes."

External damage was limited, but the home suffered extensive water damage.

The fire was almost immediately dispatched as a box alarm, with calls for help from the Greencastle Fire Department, Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department and the Bainbridge Volunteer Fire Department.

Also on scene was Operation Life and the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

While much of the fire was knocked out pretty quickly, firefighters continued to battle hot spots until around 2:30 before leaving the scene at 4 p.m.

Price advised the cause of the blaze was undetermined as of Friday evening, but it appears to have started in the east end of the attic.

The residents were said to be at the home when the blaze began, but were able to get out of the home before firefighters arrived.
