Huffman wins No. 500
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Sunday's DePauw women's basketball game was similar to many in the program's rich history as the Tigers trailed for a little over one minute early in the contest and then, methodically, wore down their opponent on the way to victory. This time the opponent was Illinois College and the final score was 70-39 in the third-place game of the Midwest Challenge.
What was different about the win was that it was the 500th in the 22-year career of DePauw head coach Kris Huffman.
If it seems like the Tigers just celebrated a Huffman milestone, that's because the Tigers have won 100 of their last 106 contests since her 400th win on Feb.13, 2011. Huffman has directed the Tigers to a 500-105 record since starting in 1993-94.
The Lady Blues took a 2-0 lead, but from there the Tigers took control. First came an 11-2 run to take an 11-4 lead. Illinois College was within six with 12:28 left in the half, but DePauw used a 9-2 stretch to push the margin to double digits.
The Tigers scored the final six points for the first half to take a 37-19 advantage to the break. The Lady Blues scored the first bucket of the second half before DePauw scored 12 consecutive to push the margin to 28.
The hosts got no closer than 26 the rest of the way, while DePauw's largest lead was 33.
Savannah Trees led the Tigers with 15 points, while Hannah Gardner and Taylor Howard each scored collegiate highs of 12 points. Gardner led DePauw with six rebounds, while Hannah Douglas dished out a team-high six assists. Lauren Abendroth and Gardner each had four steals.
Hannah McGinnis led the Lady Blues with 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals with Maddy Keith chipping in 11 points. Mickalah York paced Illinois College with three assists.
DePauw shot 49.1 percent from the floor to the Lady Blues' 33.3 percent. The Tigers also held a 34-25 edge on the boards.
