Along with annually celebrating the achievements of a DAR Good Citizen chosen from among seniors at the four Putnam County high schools, the Washburn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), has been honoring a local resident for his or her preservation efforts.

The Greencastle chapter started the preservation recognition program six years ago, honoring local people who have helped preserve the heritage of Putnam County.

Washburn Chapter has awarded Heritage Preservation certificates to local authors John Baughman and Malcolm Romine, historic bridge expert Jim Cooper, cemetery restoration specialist Larry Tippin as well as Greencastle High School archivists John and Carolyn Carson.

This year, along with honoring Rae McFadden of Cloverdale High School as the 2014 DAR Good Citizen, the local DAR chapter has applauded the efforts of Greencastle residents Tim and Kim Shinn for their work restoring the Dr. Clinton Zaring home.

The Shinns began their restoration of the home, located at 9 E. Poplar St., after buying the dilapidated house at an auction in 2011 and restoring much of its original character. The couple have also rehabbed a smaller building on the property that has served as an office.

Since the purchase of the home, the Shinns have opened the main floor of the home as an upscale guest house with the second floor serving as a stylish apartment.

Since the completion of the renovation, the Shinns have been recognized for their efforts with the Indiana Landmarks Association naming the Zaring House as the winner of one of the Western Region Awards.

The Wasburn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Putnam County, also recognized the couple for working with the Heritage Preservation Society of Putnam County on a fundraiser to help procure funds for the restoration of the Civil War Solider monument at Forest Hill Cemetery.
