Area 30 Career Center recently hosted its first robotics competition. During the event, which was the final competition of a tournament series, Raise the Racquet, Area 30's team took first.

Area 30 Career Center hosted its first Robotics competition on Saturday, Dec. 6. This was the third and final competition of a tournament series titled Raise the Racquet.

The first two Robotics events took place in Bloomington and the teams accumulated points during each of the three competitions.

Sixteen different schools with 38 Robotics teams competed for the championship during the event.

Area 30 Career Center team members; Thomas Hunt (GHS), Mitchell Griffin (GHS), and Brandon White (SPHS) took first place in the Raise the Racquet event.

By winning all three events and accumulating the most points, Area 30 Career Center was also awarded first place for the overall tournament series. A $500 gift certificate was awarded to the team by the Bloomington Robotics Board.

Area 30 Career Center also took third place in the Full Pull event. Clay City High School won first place and Park Tudor High School came in second.

This competition is similar to a tractor pull event at the fair. Teams build robots to pull a sled of progressively increasing weight a distance of seven feet in the fastest time. During the event, Area 30 Career Center's team of Dayzsh Sutche (SPHS), Brandon Hawkins (SPHS), Jessica Owens (SPHS), and Dakota Hacker (GHS) were able to pull a total 65 pounds.

This event also gave back to the community by providing donations to the local food pantry.

Teams were required to bring nonperishables as a part of their registration. The 38 teams brought in 600 pounds of nonperishable food items.

Area 30 Career Center also performed a school-wide food drive and brought in an additional 632 pounds for a combined total donation of 1,232 pounds.

The donations were delivered to the Putnam County Food Pantry on Monday, Dec. 8.
