Double figures from three Clover boys net tourney win

Tuesday, December 30, 2014

TERRE HAUTE - The Cloverdale boys' basketball team took on the Northview Knights with both teams coming in with a loss in the tournament and a win. On the line was a matchup against the Casey-Westfield Warriors in the fifth place game. The Clovers advanced with a 65-50 win.

"We had to play our very best or we would not have won tonight and we played a very good game and we had to have it. Northview played good and they have a hot ballclub," Cloverdale coach Pat Rady said.

The Clovers got off to a fast start and a 8-2 lead quickly and after a Northview timeout, they never looked back.

The game got close at halftime with the Knights pulling to within three, 29-26 but after that the three primary scorers for the Clovers put the game away.

Senior Marquise Moore ended up with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting, senior KJ Coleman had 17 points and sophomore Cooper Neese had 14 points.

"We had three kids in double figures and the others hit big baskets and the other kids hit some big baskets," Rady said.

Coleman led all players with eight boards and freshman Jalen Moore was second out of all players with six.

After a slow start to the game shooting wise the Clovers really stepped on the gas in the second half. The Clovers shot 66 percent in the second half and only attempted five in the fourth quarter.

"I thought that in the second half we moved the ball well and had good shots," Rady said.

The Clovers handled the ball very well on the day, only committing six turnovers and the defense played well even though, for the Knights the shots were dropping.

"I was also pleased with the defense. I thought that we stopped their drives even though their shots were dropping," Rady said. "Northview is a good ballclub and they are improving each time."

Coleman had three blocks and also had a steal.

The passing of the Clovers was good as well with Neese handing over four assists.

The game before the Clovers played a very tough opponent in Terre Haute North and lost but Rady thinks that helped them prepare for this game and will help them in the future.

"North is a very good ballclub and the game was a possession game. We had not been in any games like that. North had been. The experience in this tournament that we are gaining, we hope to help us down the road," Rady said.
