Eagle Relays offer fun team bonding

Sunday, January 4, 2015

The Eagle Relays are a unique holiday event that embraces the theme of fun and fair play. Every year South Putnam hosts the swim relays and invite a school to race in some unconventional relays.

"It's a great meet because we have been training for a few weeks straight without any meets or breaks for the kids," Eagle swim coach Anna Kendall. "Mentally it's a great break to have something fun do and compete."

What makes this event different and relaxing for the swimmers are the unconventional events that the swimmers get to participate in.

"They are different events," Kendall said. "They're not events that they normally get to swim. They are swimming with teammates that they don't normally swim with on these relays. They can do some co-ed relays as well."

In addition to the co-ed relays there are also events such as the underwater relay, and the breaststroke relay among other relay events that are unfamiliar to the Eagles.

"It's fun because there are so many people that we don't usually swim with and different relays that we don't swim," senior Zane Crosby said. "It's just a good time to cheer on your team and become closer as a team."

Kendall said the meet is a fun event but at the same time will help the swimmers develop skills needed during the season.

"It's a good opportunity for them to race and practice their racing skills in a way that is fun and low-pressure," she said. "It's a fun meet for everyone. I think they all appreciate it."

The times for the event were a mere formality as there are no other event times to compare it to. However, the team bonding is as valuable low-times, as the Eagles' next meet is Jan. 10 at Greencastle for the WCC title.
