One giant leap for local gasoline prices with 40-cent hike Monday afternoon

Monday, January 5, 2015

Well, it was so nice while it lasted ...

Gasoline prices below $2 have been prevalent in the Greencastle area for a couple of weeks -- an almost unheard of circumstance around the holidays.

However, Monday afternoon that all changed as more than a 40-cent price jump sent gasoline prices back up to $2.15 a gallon for regular unleaded at most local stations, including the Speedway station at Round Barn and Indianapolis roads. Just three days ago a photo taken at the same location captured the price at $1.77.

Gas prices had been as low as $1.70 at the Greencastle Kroger earlier in the day on Monday.

  • Is that called " price gouging" ?

  • Can anyone explain why gas in Greencastle is always more expensive? It was 1.52 in Crawfordsville on Sunday.

  • The Banner ran an article 2 or 3 years ago. In that article, the Speedway manager at the time was asked why gas was so much higher in Greencastle. His answer? "We charge what the traffic will bear." Greed trumps what's right in that case.

  • They gouge Greencastle because they can get by with it!!! Makes me furious!! If I am going out of town and need enough gas to get me there, I buy two or three gallons so I can purchase it at Avon or Plainfield or Crawfordsville for twenty or thirty cents a gallon cheaper.. Do you blame me?? I guess they think with the weather we are to have this week, People won't be going out of town to buy gas...Grrrrrrrrrrrr

  • It is even higher in Terre Haute than Greencastle. Makes no sense, except greed.

  • This is the reason I do not buy gas at speedway. They mentioned a few years back that they were they price setter for the stations here in town. So I decided to buy anywhere else and let them keep the gas in the ground.

If we all stopped buying at speedway, after a few days you would see the price drop.

  • hate to break the news to you all, but Crawfordsville had the lowest gas in the entire nation this past month or so, and yes, Greencastle was above it, but Plainfield and Avon were actually holding steady with us. You could monitor it all on GasBuddy. Often times, we were lower than they were during all this. Considering oil dropped again yesterday, lower than anywhere since 2009, there actually is no excuse for the rise in gas like this, except the gas companies (not the little owners in Greencastle, but the corporate owners who actually determine prices) see a chance to inch the price back up for a bit and suck in some quick profits. Snow comes in, people rush to the pumps, quick cash. The same as everyone rushing for the milk and eggs because 3 inches of snow is going to keep you in your house for 3 weeks.
