The GHS wrestling team took on the Warrior Classic over the weekend and walked away with a third place finish out of ten teams.

However, the tournament champion at the 126 weight class, Greencastle's Michael Anderson, went 9-0 and earned the tournament's MVP award.

The Tiger Cubs wrestled nine matches in two days and GHS coach Charlie Pingleton was pleased in many areas.

"We wrestled our best tournament this season thus far," Pingleton said. "We weren't giving up as many forfeits as we did at county and it showed in our overall performance. We beat some really good teams this weekend. Bishop Fenwick from Ohio was a great win for us."

The Tiger Cubs beat Bishop Fenwick 42-49 and went 4-1 in day one, beating Providence, Bishop Chatard and Scottsburg then losing to Southport.

"We lost to Southport by three points and lost to the number 8 ranked team in the state by 24-48," Pingleton said. "We are headed in the right direction for the postseason. I think we will peak at the right time. It's very important to not peak too early and to peak for our postseason. The kids are very excited for our conference tournament coming up."

On day two Greencastle continued its strong play, beating North Knox and Southwestern. They lost to No. 8 Jennings County by only three points.

Pingleton feels that the Tiger Cubs will be a tougher team to beat, not only because the season has made them stronger competitors but Greencastle will begin to get healthy and therefore won't be giving up many forfeits near the end of the season.

"We have a lot to prove as a team and individually at Conference. We feel like we should have been county champs but giving up 36 free points to South Putnam made it very tough to come back, however, we still only lost by three points. Now that we don't have that many forfeits, we are expecting good things come conference."

The MVP of the match, Anderson led the entire Tournament with six pins. RyleyCook, who moved up in weight class to gain better competition, went 8-1.

Greencastle's next match is at Crawfordsville for the Athenian Invite at 8:30 a.m on Saturday before the WCC tournament on Jan. 17.
