EMINENCE--The South Putnam boys' basketball fell to 1-8 on the season after a 45-35 loss at Eminence Friday night.

Eagle head coach Greg Dean said the offense had looks but simply did not knock down shots.

"I thought we got good shots at times," Dean said. "We shot a poor percentage from the field and from the free throw line."

Dean said Eminence had the run of the middle of the court, allowing the hosts to dictate how the game was played.

"Defensively, we couldn't keep them out of the lane," Dean said. "They kept beating us off the dribble and when you beat somebody off the dribble and get to the heart of the court, you can do anything you want.

"You can kick out for three point shots, you can dump it down to the big man on the block and a lot of times, (Brennan Ringler) got to the rim on us. He had 25, so we've got to do a better job defensively and find better ways to score."

Eminence scored the first six points of the second quarter before Grady McHugh hit a three and Trevor Long knocked down two baskets as part of a 7-3 run to close the quarter, leaving South Putnam trailing 24-17 at halftime.

The Eagle offense ground to a near-complete halt in the third quarter, only getting a basket from Jacob Carmichael and a three from Jacob Schroer as Eminence increased its lead to 34-22 heading into the fourth.

South Putnam briefly closed the lead to five points after a 12-5 run to open the final quarter but could only knock down one free throw from there on as the Eels eventually generated enough points from steals to secure their fourth win of the season.

South Putnam returns to action Saturday night when the Eagles travel to Edgewood and Dean said finding ways to crowd out the Mustangs in the low post would be important to finding a second win on the season.

"We've got to go down there and get better in as many facets of the game as we can," Dean said. "We've got to take better care of the basketball, we've got to run our offense efficiently and effectively, try to execute better and when we get open looks, we've got to knock them down.

"It's going to be a battle and we've got to really work to block out."
