Sunday a weather waiting game in central Indiana

As sports fans across central Indiana prepped for the Colts' NFL Divisional Round matchup with the Broncos on Sunday, many were also keeping one eye on the weather forecast.

With the first precipitation hitting the area around 4 p.m., rain was set to turn to freezing rain later in the evening.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, Putnam County was under an ice storm warning through 7 a.m. Monday. Thereafter, a winter weather advisory was set for 7 a.m. through 1 p.m. Monday.

The heaviest freezing rain was expected between 6 p.m. Sunday and 4 a.m.

Thereafter, freezing rain was expected to change to sleet and then snow, with 1-2 inches of snow expected Monday morning.

Putnam County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Severe Weather Specialist Chris Edwards expected 0.2 inches of ice on Sunday evening.

EMA Public Information Officer Russ Evans said the best advice for people dealing with these dangerous conditions was to stay home whenever possible.

"People just need to stay in and ride it out," Evans said. "Just use common sense -- leave early and slow down. And if it's too bad, just turn around and go home. You're worth more to your family alive.

"People just need to be extra careful through this whole thing."

Other advice for safety includes avoiding slips and falls by staying inside whenever possible.

Likewise, stay off the roads as much as possible. If driving is necessary, slow down, yield the right away, buckle up and have emergency go bags and gear at all times.

The fewer risk exposures you encounter the safer you will be. The weather will pass and better conditions are coming.
