Less than a week before the West Central Conference championship South Putnam's wrestling team took the opportunity to get some last-minute work in when Plainfield visited on Tuesday.

Despite the 51-23 loss, Eagle coach Josh Hendrickson is focusing on the long run and how to keep his team polished for the road ahead.

"We're just getting back to the basics," Hendrickson said. "We are trying to get polished up and getting ready to go. Tonight we were a little rusty. We weren't able to practice (Monday) due to the weather. But overall, we are in good condition."

South Putnam has steadily improved all year, and since its first-place win at Rockville on Dec. 10, it has won three tournaments, including the Putnam County Tournament on Dec. 18.

The Eagles will be gearing up again, as they face some familiar wrestlers in the WCC Saturday at Cloverdale.

"We are very excited," Hendrickson said. "We've already seen everybody, so we will have some rematches there which is always exciting. With the county rivals and Cascade there as well, it'll be a fun day of wrestling Saturday."

In the Plainfield match some underclassmen, such as Kieffer Vittetow, Joey Masters and Kyle Shaffer among others, pulled off the victories.

But in the conference tournament, every point will count and Hendrickson is looking forward to filling out the weight classes and getting points wherever the team can.

"We've got seniors here who haven't had much wrestling time," Hendrickson said. "We've got some newer seniors. Guys that have stepped in filled weight classes for us. They work hard and get better every day. Hopefully that pays dividends down the road. Saturday hopefully."
