GHS beats WCC rival Cadet swim team

If there's been a bogey team for Greencastle's girls' swim team over the last few seasons, it's been WCC-rivals Cascade.

The Cadet girls had won the last four dual meets despite the Tiger Sharks winning the WCC before three of the meetings.

That would not be the case for a fifth straight time as the hosts won the girls' meet 94-86 while the boys kept up winning ways over the visitors 135-46.

Greencastle head coach Kent Menzel commended the team for being able to move past the conference meet and focus despite losing Monday's practice to weather.

"I think we moved on very well from conference," Menzel said. "We had a talk, even on the bus ride home, about a complete change of goals toward the sectional championship and the state meet.

"We missed practice on Monday but got in the water and made up for it on Tuesday with a very difficult workout. I think they responded very well off of that."

Cecilia Pohler and Mallary Meyer pushed the Tiger Sharks to the win with two individual wins apiece.

Pohler won the 200 and 500 freestyle races while Meyer claimed the 200 IM and 100 butterfly events. Pohler and Meyer were both on the winning 400 freestyle relay team along with Grace Gillen and Amelia Smith, while the team of Pohler, Smith, Gillen and Corrie Romer won the 200 freestyle relay.

Romer and Smith also won events as Romer won the 100 breaststroke and Smith finished first in the 100 freestyle.

Menzel said speed at the top of the order helped the team power past the Cadets.

"The key tonight was awesome performances from the fast swimmers on the team, particularly Mallary Meyer and Cecilia Pohler, who had two wins each," Menzel said. "Amelia Smith and Corrie Romer swam very well tonight and so did Grace Gillian.

"We had me very nice event wins, which is what helps you to win a meet like this while powering away with the two freestyle relays was helpful as well. The girls were very strong in their relay swims, which has been a good theme for us."

Logan Wood and Elijah Brattain spearheaded the efforts in the boys' meet as each won an individual event and were part of two relays.

Wood won the 50 freestyle event while Brattain won the 100 freestyle race. Both swimmers helped the freestyle relays to wins as they were joined by Jacob Kessler and Taylor Secrest in the 200 relay and Nathan Gobert and Connor Simpert in the 400 relay.

Other wins for Greencastle included Stimpert in the 500 freestyle race, Jack Custis in the 200 IM, Mitchell Johnson in the 100 backstroke and Zach Secrest in the 100 breaststroke. In addition, Simpert, Johnson, Taylor Secrest and Zach Secrest combined to win the 200 medley relay.

Mendel felt the boys kept pushing themselves even though Cascade lacked the depth other teams on the schedule have.

"The boys swam very well, too," Menzel said. "Cascade doesn't have a lot of boys on their team, so it makes hard for them to compete overall, but they gave us me great races.

"Elijah Brattain swam very well in the 100 free, Connor Stimpert swam very well in the 500 free and we saw me great highlights through the course of the night, particularly the breaststroke race between Taylor and Zach Secrest.

One particularly bright spot for Greencastle was in the diving competition as Jake Bennett won the event over his fellow teammates and Menzel lauded his efforts.

"Another breath of fresh air for us this year has been our diving," Menzel noted. "We saw an absolute breakthrough performance tonight from freshman Jake Bennett.

"He dove very well at the WCC meet but tonight uncorked a season-best 193.8, which is the best diving performance we've seen in years for the Tiger Sharks. Jake, as well as his teammates, are working hard and we're proud of our divers for that."

Greencastle returns to action next Wednesday at West Vigo and the following Saturday at the Athenian Invite.

Menzel pointed out that the boys' team would need to be at its best while all the swimmers needed to focus on the task at hand.

"Another one of the themes that we've been working on is that you just swim well, no matter who you're swimming against or where you're swimming," Menzel said. "We're trying to not think about where we're swimming but to care about how we're swimming.

"I think that we've done well with that this year. I think that kind of attitude will carry us nicely through the meet at West Vigo.

"Lately, West Vigo's boys' team has been showing me strength, we're not in any way dismissing them and will go at them with a strong line-up and expect good swims," Menzel added. "We don't know a lot about West Vigo's girls' team.

"Some of the girls might swim me alternate events for that meet while still keeping our relays good and strong. We respect our opponents by swimming our best wherever we are and against whichever team we find ourselves competing against.
