Greencastle High School was the site of the first meeting of the year Friday night between the Tiger Cubs and the South Putnam Eagles. The Tiger Cubs cruised to an easy boys' basketball victory, 52-25.

"I thought we did a really good defensively putting pressure on them and creating steals and creating offense from those," Greencastle head coach Troy Greenlee said.

The Eagles only scored four points in each of the first two quarters and the Tiger Cubs had 16-point lead at the half.

That lead only grew as the Tiger Cubs came out firing, scoring five early points and taking a 39-18 lead into the fourth.

The Eagles had trouble with the pressure that the Tiger Cubs applied and were forced into many turnovers. The Tiger Cubs translated these into easy fast break points.

"We had 50 possessions and we turned it over 31 times. That percentage is not going to get it done. You do not have much of a chance against a team like Greencastle," South Putnam head coach Greg Dean said. "They understand their roles and they played well defensively."

South Putnam played better offensively in the second half but still the turnovers hurt them.

The Tiger Cubs outrebounded the Eagles only by one, but pulled down 10 offensive boards.

"We worked on it a ton on practice and I feel like we kept them off the boards pretty well tonight," Greenlee said.

"They got so many second-chance opportunities, we only got about 55 percent of their first shots," Dean said." I thought we did a great job on their 3-point shooters, they only made three 3-pointers.

Greencastle and South Putnam can both take this conference matchup and dissect it to see what they need to work on.

"We need to scrap as a team. We need to continue to get better rebounding the ball, I thought we were solid defensively. We need to work on our offense in the half court," Greenlee said."

"We need to take better care of the basketball and rebound the basketball, you need to do that if you want to compete," Dean said.
