Lady Clovers can't hold lead

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

The Cloverdale girls' basketball team hosted Rockville in a Tuesday night matchup, with the visitors prevailing, 50-36.

"I thought the third quarter was the difference in the game, which was our energy coming out in the third," Cloverdale head coach Matthew Langdon said.

The Rox were led by junior Meagan White with 31 points and eight boards.

The Clovers shot very well from the court in the first half as they scored 25 points on 40 percent shooting. They also defended well forcing 10 turnovers.

"When we fronted the post and did not let the ball inside, we forced turnovers and it worked well in the first half," Langdon said.

Cloverdale played in a zone in the first half and it worked well as Rockville ate up a bunch of time each possession and only scored 19.

The third quarter would seal the Clovers' fate. The Rox opened the quarter on 21-0 run. The Clovers would scored six straight points to end the quarter though. After two free throws by senior Bailee Stevens and a jumper by junior Haley Hamm, Stevens ended the scoring with a steal and a basket to close the gap to nine, 40-31.

"We did not bring any energy. I do not know if it was being tired but that third quarter just did not look like a team that was hungry," Langdon said.

That was as close as Cloverdale would get the rest of the game because the Rox kept scoring.

The Clovers did put forth the effort that was needed to win the game but the Rox kept putting the ball in the basket.

Stevens led the Clovers in points with 16, rebounds with seven, assists with 2 and steals with four on the night in the very impressive performance.

"I think we a strong enough team that we need to take advantage of opportunities that we get," Langdon said.
