CLOVERDALE--Cloverdale boys' basketball rebounded nicely Friday night for homecoming after losing to Clay City last Saturday. They beat the North Putnam Cougars 72-29.

"Obviously, they're long and athletic," Cougars' coach Collin McCartt said. "It was kind of the same old tour. We came out had too many turnovers and got ourselves into a whole."

"It's a good win. It's a conference win," Clover coach Pat Rady said. "We had an excellent crowd. Our student body is really doing a good job for us."

Sophomore Cooper Neese started the game off with a baseline layup that almost resulted with a dunk. After that the Clovers (12-5 3-0 WCC) never looked back.

Cloverdale jumped to a 10-0 lead and forced coach Collin McCartt to call a timeout for the Cougars (3-10 0-2 WCC).

"North Putnam is a team we needed to play against," Rady said. "They're young, they're going to be good and they're coached well. They really move the ball well and we needed to see a team who could do that. We had trouble doing some of the things we did this week in practice because they handled the ball so well."

Senior Michael Roberts scored the first points for the Cougars with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter with a three-pointer.

Cloverdale then jumped out to a 24-3 lead off five straight Branston Scott points.

"We feel like we have a balance attack," Rady said. "We went into a triangle two defense and we showed we can attack. We feel it was really evident tonight that we had that balanced attack."

The Cougars had big issues with turnovers that turned into points for Cloverdale. They had 14 total turnovers.

Senior KJ Coleman stole the ball from senior Michael Roberts with 1:22 left in the first half and he took the ball and emphatically two-hand jammed it. This helped the Clovers to a 35-12 halftime lead.

The second half was a replay of the firsthalf. North Putnam was down 46-16 and forced to call a timeout and Scott had scored five straight points again.

"We just didn't hit shots," McCartt said. "We had some shots we just didn't knock them down. We knew they blocked some shots, but our team just didn't get out there enough."

The Clovers nearly had five guys in double figures with only Duke Duff falling short with nine points. Marquise Moore had 15 points and Branston Scott had 10 points.

"If we can get balanced scoring it's going to be hard to cover," Rady said. "If we can get five guys in double figures and the guy off the bench does well, then it's going to be hard for defenders to cover."

Neese finished the night with a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Coleman finished one rebound short of a double-double with 16 points.

Sophomore Jordan Bean led the Cougars with seven points, all scored in the first half ,and 7 rebounds.

Cloverdale will face Shakamak at home on Jan. 27.

North Putnam will face Greencastle in its second county matchup of the season next Friday at home. It will be their homecoming.
