Legion appreciates community interest

Tuesday, February 3, 2015

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the overwhelming generosity our community showed during a recent fund drive to provide supplies to the Indiana Veterans Home in Lafayette. We received many generous donations of both cash and items to meet our goal.

The American Legion Department of Indiana tasked posts around the state with resupplying the storerooms at the Veterans Home with items such as clothing, undergarments, toiletries and puzzle books along with other essentials.

We started off our fundraising with the raffling of a handmade American flag afghan donated to Post 58 by inmates at the Putnamville Correctional Facility. That single patriotic donation got the ball rolling

We are indebted to the many anonymous donations we received. The assistance of Greencastle Eagles Aerie No. 4388 and their cash donation was exceedingly appreciated.

Post 58 would also like to thank the Beech Grove Church along with Andy and Betsy Beck for their generosity.

A special thanks to Walmart for the pricing discounts they afforded us.

Dozens of residents of our community participated to help make this effort a huge success. The American Legion Post 58 along with the hard work of many volunteers delivered almost $6,000 worth of supplies to the Indiana Veterans home to help restock those storerooms.

I cannot express enough how grateful we are to our Greencastle residents and the charity they have shown. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped. Thank you.
