Duo arrested after call from motorist
CLOVERDALE -- A call by a concerned motorist landed two Sullivan County men in jail Thursday afternoon.
At around 3:30 p.m., Putnam County 911 Dispatch received a call from a driver saying that a pickup truck was all over the road on U.S. 231.
Cloverdale Police Officer James Martin located the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop. However, he called for assistance when the driver refused to stop.
Several Putnam County Sheriff's Department officers, including Sheriff Scott Stockton, converged on the scene, where Martin had made the stop at U.S. 231 and Interstate 70 north of Cloverdale.
Martin made the stop at 3:38 p.m. The deputies assisted him when the two men inside the vehicle refused to comply with orders.
Taken into custody were the driver, Jesse Odell Davis, 22, and John Robert Grimes, 32, both of Merom, Ind.
Davis was booked into the Putnam County Jail on charges of Level 5 felony possession of a handgun by a felon, Class A misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and Class A misdemeanor resisting law enforcement.
Grimes was charged with Level 5 felony possession of a handgun by a felon and Class A misdemeanor resisting law enforcement.
Davis' criminal past includes a pair of Class D felony convictions, one in 2011 for possession of a controlled substance and the other in 2013 for theft.
In 2013, Grimes was convicted of Class D felony battery resulting in bodily injury.
