District 49 State Sen. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville) will be the guest speaker at the Greencastle Defenders of Liberty meeting on Monday, Feb. 9.

The event will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. in the Dixie Chopper Business Center at the Putnam Country Airport, 102 Ballard Lane, Greencastle.

Sen. Tomes was elected to the Indiana State Senate in 2010. He is presently assistant majority caucus chairman and chairs the Corrections Subcommittee.

He serves on the Agriculture, Commerce & Technology, Corrections and Criminal Law, Natural Resources and Utilities committees.

A proponent of gun rights, the senator has had several bills passed, one being the Indiana lifetime gun license.

Sixteen years ago, Tomes and his wife, Margie, created the 2nd Amendment Patriots, a grassroots organization in Evansville, and it is still going strong. There were more than 200 people at its monthly meeting Jan. 31.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, Tomes served with the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne Division.

He worked as a truck driver for 33 years and as a Teamsters union steward for 21 of those years.

A native and resident of Evansville, Tomes serves Posey County and portions of Gibson and Vanderburgh counties. He was re-elected to the Indiana Senate this past November.

The public is invited to attend Monday's event to meet Sen. Tomes. A question-and-answer session will follow his presentation.

The Jan. 12 meeting of the Greencastle Defenders of Liberty was canceled due to weather concerns. Putnam County Sheriff Scott Stockton was to be the speaker, and will be featured at the March 9 meeting.
