Danville tops Beech Grove in sectional

Danville utilized a 16-to-3 free throw advantage in the fourth quarter to ease past Beech Grove 69-54 in the opening game of IHSAA Girls' Basketball Class 3A Sectional No. 27 Tuesday night.

The Beech Grove Hornets shot out to an 11-3 lead early in the first quarter and held a 15-9 advantage, knocking down all three three-point shots attempted in the period.

An 8-0 run midway through the second quarter gave the Warriors their first lead of the game at 18-17 but, after trading the lead back-and-forth over the last three minutes, Beech Grove led 27-25 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Hornets took their largest lead of the game at 40-30 with a 13-5 run, only to see the lead evaporate down to as little as one as Danville closed on a 11-3 run to trail by two entering the final period.

The game turned as the Warriors made their way to the free throw line 18 times in the final quarter, knocking down 16 of them, to turn a two-point deficit into a 15-point win.

Mahela Motter knocked down all nine free throws she attempted in the fourth quarter to lead Danville with 25 points. Katie Giller led Beech Grove with 20 points.
