GMS vocal, piano students shine at ISSMA competition

Greencastle Middle School vocal and piano students competed on Saturday, Feb. 7 in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Solo and Ensemble competition at Terre Haute North High School.

Students spent many hours preparing a solo or ensemble piece and performed before a highly qualified judge.

There are five different groups a student could enter in from Group V (easier music) to Group I (very difficult). Each solo and ensemble is graded in several different categories, including intonation, tone quality, note and rhythm accuracy, interpretation, dynamics, and musicianship. Points are awarded and final ratings given from gold to participation.

The results are as follows:

Group V -- Gold Division: Selene Seaman - vocal solo; Selene Seaman - piano solo; Mia Warmoth - vocal solo; Ren Bannon - piano solo; Jakob Foss - piano solo; Zoe Weltz - piano solo; Tyler Hopper - vocal solo; Josh Nally, Nathan Simmons and Paxton Wells - vocal ensemble; Paris Collins, Elizabeth Hamilton, Faith Cook and Jasmine Weddle -- vocal ensemble; Jacie Bumgardner, Makayla Rogers, Emma Huber, Lauren Hopper, and Evelyn Tharp -- vocal ensemble.

Silver Division: Preston Cook -- vocal solo.

Group IV -- Gold Division: Connor Crary -- piano solo; Addison Hughes -- vocal solo; Elizabeth Mitchell -- vocal solo; Sarah Walker, Ashley Walker, Allyssa Sharpee, Abby McGuire and Rebecca George -- vocal ensemble; Dillon Sutherlin, Aidan O'Brien, Ephraim Hale, Kelci Slack, and Elizabeth Cox -- vocal ensemble; Addison Hughes, Donovan Asbell, Parker Black and Micah Hammond -- vocal ensemble.

Silver Division: Donovan Asbell -- piano solo; Kensie Bumgardner, Megan Manning, Mandy Zheng and Elizabeth Mitchell -- vocal ensemble; Molly Eising, Christlynn Jones and Hannah McCalister -- vocal ensemble.

Connor Crary, Jakob Foss, Ren Bannon and Donovan Asbell are students of Maureen Carkeek.

Selene Seaman is a student of Cheryl Beck. Zoe Weltz is a student of Lori Miller.

The GMS choirs are directed by Kathryn Dory.
