ROACHDALE -- In the final round of the 2015 Putnam County Boys' JV Tournament Saturday, Greencastle was able to pull away from North Putnam in the final quarter after three quarters of back-and-forth basketball.

"I'm really proud of the way we played," GHS coach Jimmy Beasley said. "We came in with seven guys. Usually we would have other guys but they played in the vasity tournament. So we had guys that stepped up and played aggressive and it's probably the best team game we've played all year. Give credit to the guys for working hard in practice this week."

The Tiger Cubs got out to a four-point lead early and held it but only barely as North Putnam did its best to keep the score close.

Greencastle's Rylan Lucas scored six in the first quarter and Jacob Sanders scored a bucket and two free throws to help the Tiger Cubs to 14 first-quarter points.

However a Hayden Rudes three-pointer, coupled with five points from Jack Kendall gave the Cougars eight.

"I thought our guys competed," NPHS coach Travis Franklin said. "They didn't give up. It's one thing we can hang our hat on."

After GHS jumped to a 16-11 lead in the second, Daniel Huffman grabbed a rebound for a putback, then North Putnam found an open Dylan Hess for three to tie the game at 16.

The Cougars outscored Greencastle 8-6 in the second quarter and went into halftime down 20-16.

North Putnam continued to spread it around in the third. The Cougars scored eight in the quarter for the third time with Huffman scoring four and Kendall and Rudes scoring two each.

Greencastle held its lead though thanks to six points from Sanders and a three from Zack Wilkerson who scored four in the second.

In crunch time it was the Tiger Cubs who prevailed. They scored 13 points to North Putnam's four, with Abraham Wade making three foul shots and Wilkerson and Lucas scoring four points.

"I feel like it's a great team victory this time," Wilkerson said. "We've been able to do really well as a group against teams that we either narrowly beat or actually lost to. We've not only improved throughout the season but we've really come together as a team and get a good win."

While Franklin thought his team just didn't make the plays down the stretch, he was impressed by his team's improvement during the course the season.

"Our guys have came a long way this year, "Franklin said. "We have a lot of young and inexperienced kids and they've grown. They've grown a lot as basketball players and as young adults. I'm am very proud of that. They're starting to catch onto the things we are trying to do. They're starting to buy in and that is a positive."
