Duo Damiana to premiere Scott Perkins' new work at DPU Concert Thursday
Duo Damiana, an innovative chamber ensemble from Eugene, Ore., will premiere "Three Recitations," a virtuosic work by DePauw University School of Music Professor Scott Perkins, as part of the next Faculty Select Series concert.
The performance will take place Thursday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Thompson Recital Hall of the DePauw University Green Center for Performing Arts.
The ensemble features Grammy Award-winning flutist Molly Barth and eclectic classical guitarist Dieter Hennings. The duo has toured extensively throughout the Midwest and Pacific Northwest regions of the country, while also championing new music by young composers.
"It's such a privilege and a joy to write for two of the world's finest musicians," Perkins commented in a recent e-mail. "I can't wait to hear them bring my music to life.
"Each of my 'Three Recitations' has a unique character. It begins with an invocation that gradually draws notes out of pitchless percussive sounds, and it is followed by a plaintive, lyrical elegy," the composer added. "The set concludes with an exuberant, vibrant homage that quotes fragments of a work by my former teacher, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, who is also a great friend of Dieter Hennings."
In addition to Perkins' new composition, Barth and Hennings will perform pieces by contemporary composers Shafer Mahoney, Toru Takemitsu, Herbert Vázquez and Chen Yi (composer-in-residence for DePauw's Music of the 21st Century Festival in 2008).
General admission tickets for the Faculty Select Series are $5. Tickets for all students, seniors and youth, are free thanks to season sponsors Judson and Joyce Green.
