City Police

Footprints in the newly fallen snow helped Greencastle City Police make a pair of arrests Thursday morning, thwarting two apparent beak-in attempts.

* At 8:45 a.m., Renegade Vandiver, 21, Danville, was arrested at a Cottonwood Court residence for attempted burglary of a Ridgway Street home.

* At 7:28 a.m., Robert Alan Jones, 36, Greencastle, was arrested on the Eagles Lodge property, 207 Elizabeth St., for burglary.

In the Vandiver case, a homeowner in the Foxridge area reportedly interrupted the suspect trying to break into his residence and called 911.

The suspect reportedly fled east on foot and was spotted by another area resident as he ran toward Ivy Tech.

Det. Randy Seipel then followed the suspect's footprints in the new snow that had fallen overnight, leading him to the front door of a residence on Cottonwood Drive in the Woods Edge Subdivision.

Vandiver was arrested and lodged in the Putnam County Jail on an attempted burglary charge.

In the other incident, Officers Ed Wilson and Darrel Bunten responded to the Eagles Lodge area after a witness reportedly spotted a suspect breaking into a storage unit on the property.

Officers observed that the lock had been cut on at least one unit and then encountered Jones at the scene.

A pair of bolt cutters were on the ground about 10 feet from Jones, police said. Footprints in the snow led from where the bolt cutters had been tossed aside to directly where the suspect was standing, police reported.

Jones was arrested and lodged in the Putnam County Jail on a burglary charge.

Two recent property-damage accidents were investigated by city officers.

* At 12:33 p.m. Thursday, a two-vehicle mishap occurred on State Road 240 at Percy Julian Drive.

Matthew Phillips, 19, Greencastle, stopped his 1997 Chevrolet pickup northbound at the stopsign and attempted to continue across the highway onto Percy Julian Drive when his vehicle was struck by a westbound 2012 Kia Sorrento, driven by Jan Vincent, 72, Crawfordsville.

Vincent told Officer Wilson he had stopped at the stopsign before pulling into the intersection but both Phillips and another witness told police the Vincent vehicle did not stop before the collision occurred.

Total damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

* At 5:01 p.m. Feb. 20, a two-vehicle accident was reported on the Walmart parking lot.

Christopher Hanley, 31, Reelsville, reportedly pulled his 1986 Jeep through the parking lane and into the path of a 2001 Buick Regal, driven by Carole Parker, 72, Greencastle, Officer Wilson reported. Parker was driving in the travel lane of the parking lot when the collision occurred.

Total damage was listed at $2,500-$5,000.

Hanley was cited for having a false or fictitious registration.

Sheriff's Department

* At 5:56 a.m. on Thursday, Ashley N. Wood, 24, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 50 South, driving a 2006 Ford F-150.

She told Deputy Adam Hull that as she came to the top of a hill, her tires lost traction, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway on the right side, hitting a utility pole and a mailbox before coming to a stop along the right side of the road.

No injuries were reported.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.
