INDIANAPOLIS -- District 44 State Rep. Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) has co-authored a resolution to honor the Circle City Carvers in the House Chamber.

The organization is a local chapter of the Eagle Crane Project which provides hand-carved, wooden canes to post-9/11 veterans who have experienced an injury requiring the use of a cane from combat-related action.

"It is an honor to join my colleagues in recognition of Circle City Carvers and the Eagle Cane Project," Rep. Baird said. "We have so many men and women who have worn the uniform and made incredible sacrifices to protect our borders and defend our freedom. These selfless individuals not only deserve our gratitude, but also our support when their service is over, which is what this project hopes to accomplish."

Rep. Baird nominated Co. David Shorter to receive a cane carved by artist Maggie Aldrich.

Col. Shorter served for approximately 30 years in the Indiana Army National Guard in many command and staff positions. Before he retired, Shorter achieved the rank of colonel as the director of logistics for Joint Force Headquarters.

Among many awards and medals, Col. Shorter received the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal during the Gulf War, as well as the Sagamore of the Wabash three times.

Artists from Circle City Carvers personalized wooden canes for each veteran recipient. On his cane, Maggie had carved an American flag with the phrase "this we will defend," along with Col. Shorter's dog tags.

"I am proud to honor Colonel David Shorter for the sacrifice he has made serving in the military," said Rep. Baird. "These canes symbolize their unquestionable strength and dedication to our country."

Along with Col. Shorter, the following recipients were also honored in the resolution and received canes:

-- Tony Paul Thomas received a cane carved by Sherrie Beck.

-- Kent Morgan received a cane carved by Jeannie Johnson.

-- James B. Zuber received a cane carved by Bob McKnight.

Rep. Baird represents all of Putnam County and portions of Clay, Morgan, Owen and Parke counties.
