Man found dead in woods near Bainbridge

Thursday, March 12, 2015

BAINBRIDGE -- The body of a 64-year-old man reported missing more than a week ago was found in the woods near his cabin Wednesday afternoon.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department and Putnam County Coroner's Office were called to 2500 East U.S. 36 at 4 p.m. for a report of a body found in the woods behind the Bainbridge Cemetery.

Authorities identified the man as Steve Owens of Bainbridge, who lived in a small cabin nearby.

Deputy Coroner Steve Walters said Owens' body had been in the woods for at least a week, possibly as much as two weeks. The condition of the body made any more specific estimate unlikely.

The body was likely buried under snow until the recent thaw.

The cause of death appears to be natural causes and foul play is not suspected. An autopsy took place in Terre Haute Thursday morning.

Owens' family had been notified as of Thursday morning.

Also assisting at the scene was the Roachdale Fire Department.
