FILLMORE -- The Fillmore Community Volunteer Fire Department's new home is taking shape on Main Street.

Fillmore Town Council member Curt Leonard said once the winter weather broke, the work on the grant-funded fire station started showing its form.

The old fire station on Hendricks Street, housed beside the construction of the new building, used to be a blacksmith shop. The fire department purchased the building in the late 1950s, and a few years later the two adjoining bays were added.

"The old building is rough," Leonard admitted last week when discussing the work on the new building.

The new fire department, with two large open bays facing Main Street, is settled next to Fillmore Town Hall.

Leonard said as of now, the town does not have a time frame for completion. He expected the concrete floor to be poured last week, and the work to continue as the spring weather allows.

Ground was broken on the $732,400 project on Dec. 23. The funding for the project was made possible with the help of an endowment fund through the Putnam County Foundation and a Community Development Block Grant through the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA).
