South Putnam has tough time against Wildcats

A sloppy field turned into sloppy play when South Putnam's baseball team took on South Vermillion Friday. A big third inning for the Wildcats was followed a huge fourth inning and South Vermillion handled the Eagles easily, winning 20-1 in five innings.

"It's early in the year," Eagle coach Zach Love said. "It was the same thing against Cloverdale. We had our bad inning. Our bad inning was about as bad as could be today. A few we had an opportunity to make some routine plays and we missed those opportunities."

After the Wildcats were up 5-0 they rattled off 12 runs with 11 coming before the first out in the fourth. South Putnam had a tough time getting any momentum offensively and defensively; mistakes were mixed with big hitting from South Vermillion.

"We've just got to have that mentality to turn the page," Love said. "We have to make the next play. I think a couple times we let a bad play become another bad play. The other side of that is South Vermillion hit the ball. They hit up the middle really well. But that bad inning really did us in."

The Eagles did show life in the later innings. Leading off in what was the final inning, junior Taylor Bush smashed a pitch deep to left field and just over the defender's glove to give South Putnam its only run.

"Taylor had a nice hit," Love said. "It's his first home run so I'm glad to see that. It's definitely the bright spot in a rough night. Hopefully he can build off of that and continue to produce this season."

The Eagles travel to North Central (Farmersburg) on Saturday and then face Cascade on Monday.
