Those interested in participating in the Putnam County Fair Queen contest are invited to an informational call out session Saturday.

The fair queen committee and 2014 Miss Putnam County, Brittany Birt, will be presenting information about the contest at 2 p.m. at the Dixie Chopper Conference Center.

Committee Chair Rachel Wilson said this non-formal meeting is will offer insight into the competition and the workshops being held during the summer before the July 11 contest. This call out session is not mandatory. The deadline to sign up for the competition is May 15.

"If they have any questions, this is a good place to find out more," Wilson said.

Locally, the participants must be entering their third year in the Putnam County 4-H program. Per the Indiana State Fair Standards, participants must be 18 by June 1, 2016 and not be older than 22 by the same date.

"This is an opportunity to expand their horizons and grow as a young woman," Wilson said about the importance of the competition.

The workshops hosted throughout the summer will help the participants with the competition in July, but also provide real world experience as well. Some of the workshops will focus on picking the best colors and styles to compliment natural beauty, make up application, interviewing techniques, etiquette, modeling and confidence building.

"This helps with college and job interview practice in a safe environment," Wilson said, noting this will also provide practice for public speaking.

Wilson said while many of the participants already know each other from their time at the fair, there are often new friendships built as well because participants may not work in the same areas in the fair.
