Parke County to open first section of ADA-accessible trail

Thursday, April 16, 2015

ROSEDALE -- On Friday, April 24 at 1 p.m., the Covered Bridge Gateway Trails Association will celebrate the grand opening of the first ADA-accessible hiking/biking trail in Parke County.

A ceremonial ribbon-cutting event is scheduled at the trailhead in Rosedale.

Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson will be the keynote speaker. The event is open to the public.

This event is the result of more then six years of effort of the Covered Bridge Gateway Trails Association to purchase and build biking/hiking trails in Parke County using former railroad properties. This is a sixth-tenths of a mile trail that runs from the center of Rosedale south toward the Vigo County line.

The Covered Bridge Gateway Trails Association (CBGTA) is a non-profit organization promoting recreational trails in west-central Indiana as they relate to tourism, economic development and public health. The focus is on the Covered Bridge Gateway Trail plan from Terre Haute to Turkey Run, linking the National Road Heritage Trail to the B&O Trail.

"This is the first segment to open in Parke County of what will eventually become the longest closed loop trail system in the world, linking Indianapolis, Rockville, Terre Haute and then back to Indianapolis," CBGTA President Miriam Blane noted.
