Eagle track team falls short of Cascade

Friday, April 17, 2015

South Putnam's Track team had a tough time getting ahead against its WCC rival Cascade Tuesday. Though Many Eagles raced well, South still fell 76-47.

"Losing all three relay events really set us back in the team scoring however, we did really well as individuals," Eagle coach Brandon Welto said. "Ariel won three events with solid performances; Madie Egold comfortably took two wins in the distance events, and Deborah Cheatham continued her dominance in High Jump. We also had some really impressive runs from our freshmen.

"Maddie McHugh had two second place finishes in 1600 800 and Ally Nichols showed some serious toughness in a solid 400 200 double," Welti continued. "In the field events we've changed some things up, and Coach Aker has really helped our girls improve and gain some confidence. Jenna Carmichael had a solid performance in her first time throwing Disc, and that was great to see. Overall, we had a solid night on an individual level."

While injury issues have bugged the Eagles Welti is confident that the quality runners on his team will make up for a slight lack of depth.

"These girls have been incredibly hard-working at practice," Welti said. "They've been disciplined and motivated, and they do a great job of listening to their coaches. I know that by the end of the season, this team is going to be able to compete at a much higher level."
