Cougar golf team gets the better of Tri-West

Friday, April 24, 2015

Coach Patrick was hoping for a little better weather when the Cougars traveled to TriWest to meet up with the Bruins. Several Cougars struggled with the winds and cooler temperatures on Tuesday when they came up short against Western Boone but did manage to take Southmont. The Cougars shot a 179, while Southmont carded a 195 and Western Boone shot a 166.

With sunny skies and a slightly less windy day, the Cougars fought the crosswinds and fast greens to declare another win. Jake Holtze played a very steady and consistent game by shooting a 40, which earned him medalist for the meet. Austin Judy, with troubles hitting the fairways the last two nights, managed to still come in with a 41. Judy's short game is very good, which helps keep him in the 40-41 scores range. Danny Smith has struggled the last two meets as well but more so with penalties. He has already accumulated eight penalties this season, which is two over his entire yearly penalties from 2014. Even with three penalties for the night, Danny carded a 44, thanks to having the lowest putts for night with 14. Preston Porter completed the team score with another 44, with the Cougars taking the win with a 169. Porter has been working hard at practices and his continued improvement is beginning to show up in his scores.

Other players for the Cougars included Emmett Holsapple, shooting a 51. Emmett has been fairly consistent shooting in the high 40's but a few extra penalties tonight kept that from happening. Travis Pearl came in with a 55, Aaron Green shot a 58 as well as Austin Wright.

Coach Patrick indicated it is still early enough in the season to work on some problems with the mechanical skills of golf, but feels that right now the team has a few players that have not developed a method of getting their mental game in order and this getting in their way of success.

The Cougars will travel to Crawfordsville Country Club on Saturday to defend their title in the Southmont Invitational.
