Man arrested in Robe-Ann Park following fight nearby
A Monday afternoon fight at an Anderson Street residence resulted in a Greencastle man being arrested in Robe-Ann Park for his role in the fight, as well as for discarding a gun near the playground.
Shortly before 2 p.m., Greencastle Police Officer Darrel Bunten and Assistant Chief Brian Hopkins were dispatched to 608 Anderson St. regarding a reported fight in progress.
While en route, the officers were advised that one of the subjects was armed with a gun. Upon arrival, they were told a man was still inside the home with a gun.
Hopkins then noted a man running from behind the residence toward Robe-Ann Park. The subject was later identified as 33-year-old Dane Archer.
During the pursuit by Hopkins and Bunten, Archer ran around the outside of Emerald Palace playground, where children had been playing. There were also young people on the nearby basketball courts.
While fleeing police, Archer reportedly tossed aside a handgun near a picnic table in front of the Emerald Palace.
The officers caught Archer in the parking lot and placed him in custody.
While Hopkins and Bunten were detaining Archer, Detective Capt. Randy Seipel commenced the investigation, while Detective Michael Collins entered the home and talked to witnesses.
Alleged victims told Collins that Archer had hit them in the head with the pistol.
Operation Life was called to the scene to attend to the victims as well as Archer.
A man with his head bandaged was seen being helped from the Anderson Street residence into an ambulance.
No injuries to police officers or bystanders were reported in the incident.
In addition to GPD and Operation Life, the Putnam County Sheriff's Department and DePauw Public Safety assisted in the incident.
Archer was transported to the Putnam County Jail, where he was booked in at 3 p.m. on preliminary charges of battery with a deadly weapon and resisting law enforcement.
The case is pending review by the Putnam County Prosecutor's Office.
