Events, merchant specials listed for initial First Friday effort May 1

A new season of First Friday events will begin May 1 in downtown Greencastle.

Franklin Street will be decked out in honor of Saturday's Kentucky Derby, so visitors are urged to wear their favorite Derby hat to win a prize Friday evening.

Featured entertainment on the Franklin Street stage this Friday will be the Lemon Brothers Band, beginning at 7 p.m. while Almost Home/Swizzle Stick grills out food and offers beer tasting.

At 9 p.m., War Radio will be playing inside the Swizzle.

Other specials and special events include:

Putnam County Public Library -- Sidewalk book sale, 2-7 p.m. with live music by Chris Wurster, 5-7 p.m. There also will be a hands-on display of court records dating back to the 1800s and other local history displays with Tony Barger, as well as a photography exhibit by Hoang Nguyen, a fifth-year intern at DePauw University.

Heritage Preservation Society -- Mini-fair, 5-8 p.m. at the restored Carriage House on Vine Street (see separate story online or in Monday, April 27 newspaper).

Bagos Coffee Shop -- The Greencastle Arts Council will present "Close Encounters," new paintings by Carianna Arrendondo with a reception beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Shuee & Sons -- Shuee's Furniture & Mattress will be having a Serta Memory Foam Travel Pillow drawing. Stop by any time on Friday to enter. Store hours 9-6. Drawing will be made at 6 p.m. and announced on the square during First Friday.

-- Shuee's Appliance & Electronics will have a 1947 TV and a 1957 wringer washer on display and will be open until 6 p.m.

Moore's Bar -- Ribeye steak dinner or fisherman's platter specials.

Starbucks -- 25 percent off any brewed, iced or hot tea or coffee.

Eitel's & Co -- Stop by, take a look behind the scenes of how they prepare for a very busy season. In-store specials: Friday flowers buy one, get one free and 15 percent off all gifts. Store tours 5-7 p.m. Open until 7.

Wilson's Photography/Buzz Bomb Graphics -- Stop in and see the new store and studio. Also, check out the Heritage Wall on the east side of the building, along Vine Street.

Greencastle Rotary Club -- Will have its "Fun and Fellowship" tent up.

Mason Jewelry -- Free cleaning on First Friday.

Game Warehouse -- 10 percent board games (cannot be combined with other discounts).
